It pursued a policy of international neutrality, but with the end of the Cold War, it began drifting towards the West. There is a dynamic team fight for the positions leading up the the objectives and that is where the gunplay of insurgency shines. There is generally a left and right flank and a center route to each objective. Previous titles have levels purpose built for push. The labyrinth is so deep, and seemingly without much individual rhyme or reason that it just leads to the worst of insurgency gameplay, plopped in one of the thirty some corners a player has to clear on their way to an objective. Push, the games flagship mode ends up with countless odd positions, large deadzones, chokepoints, and just generally unsatisfying areas within the map to fight in. As a result none of any areas in the maps are actually built to interesting and engaging for a particular game mode. These massive maps are built to be played out on multiple game modes. So why fundamentally alter the game design to accommodate for them? This leads into another problem that plagues many shooters, but may be Sandstorms biggest flaw. Anyone who has played more than a few matches knows that trucks are useless in 95% of the games played. What you end up with are unnecessarily bloated maps built around mechanics that don't serve the core gameplay. This is seemingly due the the inclusion of vehicles as a gameplay element for the campaign which never was. The maps are unlike previous insurgency titles, they are massive labyrinths of positions with countless overlapping fields of fire. However, the ghost of this concept lives on in every aspect of Sandstorm and for all the worst reasons.
As development progressed for this game it was clear that wasn't going to be the case in reality, and eventually it was cut altogether. The original game was intended to be released with a large single player campaign featuring vehicles and some sort of narrative. Unfortunately outside of the core gunfighting gameplay Sandstorm falls short in most of its other aspects. The core of Insurgency is gold, and it still is. Followed by a manic gunfight that relied on reflexes and quick thinking, where guns actually felt dangerous. Moving very deliberately and slowly through the maps, controlling angles and getting in position to defend or attack an objective. I was immediately hooked on the unique blend of tactical and action shooter mechanics. I started playing insurgency with the previous titles of Insurgency 2014 and the following title Day of Infamy.
